Last week on the Quingo Scooter User’s Blog we reflected back on just a couple of the amazing achievements of the Red Wheelies, the UK’s only Mobility Scooter Formation Display Team, powered by Quingo.
In that blog we recalled how over the weekend of 14th-15th May 2011, the Quingo team joined forces with the Red Wheelies for thier 24 Hour Mobility Scooter Endurance Challenge in which they broke the Guinness World Record for the longest distance covered on a mobility scooter within a 24 hour period.
Royal Wheelie
Just a year after their tremendous achievement, the Red Wheelies invited HRH Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to be an ‘honorary member’ of their team in May 2012.
After celebrating their 150 mile trek from Winchester to Canterbury, the team wrote to invite the Duchess to join them after spotting a newspaper photo of her on a mobility scooter as she presented Afghanistan campaign medals to soldiers a few months beforehand.
Jackie Weeden, team leader of the Wheelies said at the time: “I couldn’t believe it when Carol showed us the letter from the Duchess formally announcing her as an ‘honorary member’. We are delighted to be able to welcome the eleventh member to the team and proud that the Duchess of Cornwall has shown her support for our venture with a personally written response.”
The team were delighted when the Duchess wrote back personally, to say that she ‘was delighted’ to become an honorary member of the team!
The letter from Camilla was a highlight in a year that saw the Red Wheelies go on to tackle challenges bigger than ever before. Once again the entire Quingo team would like to thank them and their support teams. We were privileged to be part of the venture helping to raise positive awareness of MS.
